"At Westport, there were my white knickers that startled the Connecticut hills...mad rides along the Post Road...the beach...and walks beside colonial walls under the freshness of lilacs."
-Zelda Fitzgerald. Summer 1920
Built in 1873 and transformed into a luxury hotel in 1993, The Inn at National Hall was selected for inclusion in The National Register of Historic places in 1994, just one year after its opening. Westport enjoys a colorful & celebrated maritime history. By the 1800's working sloops and majestic schooners docked along the waterfront and at the foot of National Hall loading onions and other local harvests bound for New York and beyond.
In the 1900's New York commuters swelled its ranks and summer visitors flocked to Westport's picturesque beaches. Now Westport is known as a mecca for "creatives" in the world of theater and the arts. Familiar residents have included Robert Redford, Bette Davis, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and Martha Stewart who films her TV show, Martha Stewart Living, from her Westport studios.
Referred to by some as "Beverly Hills East," Westport offers visitors an abundance of stimulating cultural and recreational activities. A stroll away from National Hall is their charming Main Street with boutiques, antique shops and art galleries. Nearby are the famous Westport Country Playhouse and Compo Beach.
